WHO reduces its recommended quarantine times before the omicron variant

The World Health Organization (WHO), which continues to recommend a 14-day quarantine for contacts with COVID-19 patients in places with a high incidence of the pandemic, reduced this time to seven days, in the context of the current wave linked to the omicron variant, with a high number of mild cases.

Quarantine can be reduced to seven days in contacts who do not show symptoms and have tested negative for PCR or antigen tests, the WHO indicated in a published recommendation guide.

This time could, however, be raised to 10 days in places where access to tests is more difficult, as long as the contact does not show symptoms, the Geneva-based organization added in the document.

Although the WHO opens the door to this relaxation in quarantines, the agency recommends that contacts continue to wear a medical mask for two weeks when interacting with other people, both indoors and outdoors.

It also recommends that they maintain other preventive measures, such as physical distancing, proper ventilation of the premises in which they are, and frequent hand hygiene during those two weeks, as well as new tests, if these are possible, in case they begin to develop symptoms.
