Magnitude 6.2 earthquake shakes Guatemala and causes some material damage

An earthquake of magnitude 6.2 shook the south of Guatemala in the early hours of Wednesday, reported the United States Geological Survey (USGS) and local agencies, with no casualties for now.

The epicenter of the earthquake was located less than 100 km southwest of Guatemala City, on the coast of the department of Escuintla, and had a depth of 84 km, according to the USGS.

According to the local measurement institutes, the earthquake had an intensity of 6.8 and was followed by an aftershock of 4.8.

The first earthquake caused landslides on roads, some light damage to houses and power outages, but no casualties have been reported, according to reports from rescue services.

Last year, more than 125 tremors were recorded in Guatemala without any deaths or significant damage.

The System of the Coordinator for Disaster Reduction (Conred) has asked Guatemalans to be “prepared” for this type of unpredictable phenomenon, adopting the correct protection measures and knowing where to find out about the situation, in case of an earthquake.

Guatemala usually suffers from phenomena of this type due to the convergence of the Caribbean, Cocos and North American tectonic plates, as well as local geological faults that generate a series of movements, often imperceptible to humans. (I)
