The Specialized Prosecutor for Environmental Matters (FEMA) of Peru managed for the first time that the Superior Court of Justice imposed a conviction for the crime of illegal trafficking in shark fins, the Public Ministry reported on Wednesday.
The court ruling, which creates a precedent in Peru in the fight against the illegal trafficking of aquatic species marketed for export to Asian countries, sentenced traffickers Jorge Roldán Angulo and Poly Diks Pinto to four years and six months in prison.
In addition, it imposed on them the payment of a civil compensation of 106,375 soles (28,000 dollars) for illegal trafficking of aquatic species in its aggravated form.
The facts about this case occurred on March 13, 2018, when the authorities detained a vehicle belonging to the company Flores Hermanos SRL bound for Lima and coming from the northern city of Tumbes, and verified that the truck was transporting 51 bags of fins. of shark, equivalent to 1,800 kilograms.
The investigation concluded that the deputy manager of the company Ajansa Perú SAC, Jorge Roldán Angulo, sold the driver Poly Dicks Pinto the illegal merchandise for $18,000 without having the authorization of the General Directorate of Supervision, Control and Sanction of the Ministry of Production, to acquire, market and transport shark fins, as established by law.
For the identification of the fins, FEMA had the participation of the expert Sebastián Hernández, a marine biologist who concluded that eight species of shark were in Appendix II of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora ( CITES), of which Peru is a part. FEMA reported in a statement that among the species analyzed were the pelagic thresher shark, hammerhead shark, smooth shark and silky shark.
More than 300 species are threatened by illegal wildlife trafficking in Peru, where more than 5,000 specimens are seized each year due to illegal activities that put the biodiversity of the country at risk, recognized for hosting more than 70% of the biological diversity of the planet . (I)
