A pregnant woman showed up at a Pakistani hospital with a nail driven into her head by a healer who had guaranteed she would give birth to a boy, medical sources said on Wednesday.
This woman arrived at a hospital in Peshawar, in northwest Pakistan, after having tried to remove the nail herself, she told the AFP Dr. Haider Khan, who treated her.
“He was fully conscious, but he was in a lot of pain,” he explained.
An X-ray showed that the nail had been driven five centimeters into the skull, missing the brain.
The woman said she was the mother of three daughters and was pregnant with a fourth.
Traditional healers, with practices often rooted in Sufi mysticism, are common in Pakistan, a majority Muslim country, although various Islamic schools of thought disapprove of such rites.
In South Asia, having a son is often considered a good omen, as he is supposed to be more capable of securing his parents’ financial future than a daughter.
Pakistani police are now trying to question the woman. “We’ll get our hands on the sorcerer soon,” she promised the AFP Peshawar Police Chief Abbas Ahsan. (I)
