The Lourdes grotto, where according to tradition the Virgin Mary appeared to the adolescent Bernadette Soubirous in 1858, will reopen on Friday after two years closed due to the covid-19 pandemic, the Marian pilgrimage center announced on Tuesday.
Pilgrims will be able to access the Massabielle grotto again, arrive “at the feet of the Virgin Mary, Immaculate Conception, touch the rock and approach the fountain,” celebrates the sanctuary in a statement.
The closure of the grotto hampered visits to the tourist town in the south of France, which depends 90% on tourism.
Before the pandemic, many sick people from all over the world traveled to Lourdes in search of a cure, among the 3.5 million annual visitors.
The reopening will take place at noon on Friday, coinciding with the Angelus prayer and the celebration of the XXX World Day of the Sick. (I)
