US offers a reward for the whereabouts of the leader of the Islamic State in Afghanistan

The US Government offered this Monday a $10 million reward for information leading to the “identification or location” of the leader of the Islamic State terrorist group (IS) in Afghanistan, Sanaullah Ghafarialso known as Shahab al Muhajir.

The State Department reported in a statement that it will grant another $10 million reward for data leading to arrest or conviction “in any country” of those responsible for the attack on August 26 against the kabul airport.

According to the US, a total of 13 US soldiers and 172 Afghan civilians were killedwhile others 150 people were injuredin that attack, perpetrated by a suicide bomber at one of the gates of the airport facility.

The attack was claimed by the jihadist organization and occurred during the withdrawal and evacuation of US soldiers and civilians and their Afghan allies from the country.

The State Department indicated that Ghafari was appointed commander of the Islamic State of Khorasan (IS-K) group in June 2020.as the Afghan branch of the terrorist group is called, and is accused by the US of approving all IS operations in the Central Asian country and of facilitating its financing.

ISIS is considered a bitter enemy of the Taliban —which last August took control of almost all of Afghanistan— for strategic and political reasons, even though they largely share the same ideological and doctrinal sources. (I)
