At least 16 dead bodies were found this Saturday in the municipalities of Fresnillo and Panfilo Natera in the state of Zacatecas, north-central Mexico, reported the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE).
In a statement, the Prosecutor’s Office specified that 10 bodies were located in Fresnillo and another 6 in Pánfilo Natera and about these events, recorded this Saturday morning, said that “they are being treated by expert personnel and police officers.”
Regarding the bodies found, the governor of the state of Zacatecas, David Monreal, said in a preliminary way, in a message on social networks, that they are allegedly members of organized crime.
“In a first investigation of the events that occurred this morning we can say that presumably they are members of opposing criminal groups, however, we are going to wait for the investigations conclude and give certainty“said the state president in a video.
According to the first versions, the 10 bodies, whose identity and sex are unknown, were abandoned in the Pardillo III community, part of Fresnillo, they were wrapped in blankets and were found about 10 meters away from each other. It is believed that they were thrown from a moving vehicle.
In the case of the six bodies located in Pánfilo Natera, it was indicated that they corresponded to six unidentified men, who were hanging from the neck of the railing of a cellar. After both findings, agents of the Mexican Army, the National Guard and municipal police launched an operation to locate those responsible.
Regarding the progress in the investigations, the State Prosecutor’s Office said that it will be through the institutional channels in which the official information will be offered and expanded. The state of Zacatecas is a strategic point for the Mexican cartels that control that entity by zones. Since last November, given the increase in violence and insecurity, the federal government implemented the Zacatecas Plan with the deployment of different security forces.
It was precisely to this plan that Governor Monreal referred, who recalled that together with the federal Executive they designed the Zacatecas Two Plan, which, he said, “has given results in the decrease in crimebut it has also generated an escalation in violence”.
This, “because of clashes between organized crime groups that unfortunately have caused human losses, such as those that took place this morning in the municipalities of Fresnillo and Pánfilo Natera,” he said.
In 2021, the state experienced a substantial increase in violence in the second half of the year and was the scene of several massacres and executionsas well as the appearance of hanging bodies, events that have not stopped at the beginning of the year.
Mexico registered in 2021 another violent year with 33,308 intentional homicides and different massacres that hit the country and dyed it red despite the slight decrease in cases compared to the previous year.
According to official data presented by the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC), Mexico registered 33,308 intentional homicides last year, 3.6% compared to the 34,554 murders in 2020.
