EU calls for an “ambitious” agreement to regulate the power of technology companies

The Heads of State and Government of the European Union (EU) asked to reach an agreement “ambitious” and “as soon as possible”On the two laws that are currently being negotiated in Brussels to prevent market abuse by big technology, mainly from the United States.

This was reflected in the conclusions of the summit that began this Thursday in Brussels and ended this Friday, in which the debate on the ruling of the Polish constitutional court ensuring that national law has primacy over European law and the increase in prices of energy centered the discussions.

The law of digital markets aims to regulate the access and use of the data of large technology companies, one of their main businesses, preventing, for example, from using the commercial information of their customers to compete against them.

The debate in the European Parliament is currently focused on whether these conditions should be imposed on companies with a market capitalization of at least 100 billion euros, as proposed by the rapporteur, the MEP of the European People’s Party, Andreas Schwab, which it would mainly affect Google, Amazon, Facebook and Apple.

On the other hand, Germany, France and the Netherlands want greater capacity to control technology companies, without giving as much power to Brussels.

With the other of the rules, the law of digital services, the EU wants to force companies to quickly remove illegal content from their web pages. In addition, the rapporteur in the European Parliament, the Social Democrat Christel Schaldemose, wants to ban personalized advertising, something Brussels is opposed to.

In the conclusions of this Friday, the Heads of State and Government also highlighted that the negotiations within the Council of Commerce and Technology with the United States are “a step in the right direction to strengthen transatlantic cooperation in the digital field”.

European leaders also demanded “rapid progress“When creating a”European microchip ecosystem”, Fundamental to carry out the digital transition and whose current scarcity is affecting the global industry and in this sense they pointed to the future European chip law that will be presented by Brussels in the second quarter of next year.

They also called for the establishment of a regulatory framework that allows the innovation of artificial intelligence, both in the public and private sectors, as well as that the implementation of this technology respect fundamental rights.

The Heads of State and Government also underlined the “need for effective coordination and preparation“To deal with the”cybersecurity threats.
