The president of United States, Joe Bidenhas authorized the sending of more soldiers to Eastern Europe, in a clear gesture of support for its allies against potential threats from Russia, which has deployed more than 100,000 troops near the borders with Ukraine.

Department of Defense spokesman, John Kirbyhas confirmed to the media the repositioning in Poland and Germany of about 2,000 troops, while at Romania A thousand more will go.

According to government sources quoted this Wednesday by several North American media, including the CNN network or the newspaper Washington Postthe changes will become effective “in the next few days”.

The United States had already put in advance notice to 8500 troops in the event that the Alliance needed a rapid deployment, although for now everything will be done in accordance with bilateral agreements, as explained by Kirby, who has wanted to separate both initiatives.

The Pentagon spokesman has also emphasized that “these forces are not going to fight in Ukraine” and has indicated that these are temporary movements, not permanent, and therefore they will be reviewed depending on how the situation in Eastern Europe evolves.

For his part, the Polish Defense Minister, Mariusz Blaszczakthanked this “strong sign of solidarity” by the United States, which he already spoke about last week by phone with his American counterpart, Lloyd Austin, and which is expressly framed in the situation around Ukraine.

“We are against any aggression,” Blaszczak stressed on his Twitter account, specifying that the US reinforcement will consist of 1,700 soldiers.

Moscow has repeatedly criticized US military involvement in European territory, to the extent that it perceives it as a threat. It has also asked NATO to stop its expansion in Eastern Europe.

Thus, Russia today condemned the US decision again. “They are destructive steps, absolutely unjustified, which reinforce military tension and limit the space for political decisions,” he said. Alexandr GrushkoRussian Deputy Foreign Minister, to the Interfax agency.

Grushko has considered that this step will only please the Ukrainian authorities, since “they will be able to continue sabotaging the Minsk Agreements at no cost.”

For its part, NATO has applauded Biden’s decision, stressing that it is a “strong signal” of Washington’s commitment. “I welcome the decision of the United States to deploy additional forces in Germany, Poland and Romania, increasing NATO’s collective defense and deterrence,” said the Secretary General of the Atlantic Alliance, Jens Stoltenbergit’s a statement.
