The mandatory anti-COVID vaccine in the world

The health certificate is imposed in a growing number of countries for some professions or activities, but the mandatory anti-COVID vaccine is a rarity, only approved in a handful of countries, including Ecuador.

Below is a look at the different mandatory forms of vaccination imposed around the world in the face of the pandemic.

Few generic obligations

In December, Ecuador declared the anti-COVID vaccine mandatory for the entire population over five years of age, which was a world first.

Before, in July 2021, two authoritarian countries in Central Asia, Turkmenistan and Tajikistan, and the federal state of Micronesia, in the Pacific, had imposed the measure on those over 18 years of age.

Austria is the first country in the European Union (EU) to pass a law in this regard that will affect the entire adult population and will come into force on February 4. Whoever does not comply risks a significant fine that will be abolished if they are vaccinated in the next two weeks.

In Germany, the Bundestag began to debate on January 26 a compulsory vaccination project, defended by the new Social Democratic Chancellor Olaf Scholz.

In Indonesia, getting the vaccine is mandatory, in theory, from February 2021. But in practice, less than half of the population is vaccinated a year later.

only for the elderly

Two European countries impose vaccines on the age groups most likely to fall seriously ill from the infection.

In Italy, a decree law adopted on January 5, 2022 requires everyone over 50 years of age to have been inoculated as of February 15.

In Greece, it applies from the beginning of the year for those over 60 years of age. The Czech Republic had proposed a similar system, but the new government scrapped it in January.

for certain professions

Since mid-2021, several countries have imposed this obligation on some professional categories.

In France, since September 15, it applies to hospital and nursing home staff, firefighters, ambulance drivers and home caregivers.

In Italy, health workers have been affected since the end of May and nursing home staff since October 10. They also require a vaccination certificate from school personnel and law enforcement.

In Greece, vaccination became mandatory for nursing home workers on August 16 and for health personnel on September 1.

England applied it in mid-November for nursing home staff and will do so from April for health personnel.

In Germany, medical staff will be required to provide proof of full vaccination from March 15.

In some countries, this provision is not limited to the health and care sector. In Hungary, from the end of October, companies can require their workers to be vaccinated.

In Panama, President Laurentino Cortizo decreed this obligation for all officials on January 5. So did Rwanda, which requires its public staff to resign if they do not want to be vaccinated.

In the United States, President Joe Biden announced on September 9 the mandatory vaccination for 100 million workers, civil servants or employees of the private sector. But the measure, suspended in November by the federal court, was definitively blocked by the Supreme Court on January 13.

The health certificate

In a growing number of countries, a vaccination certificate is required to access some spaces, carry out certain activities or travel.

In Saudi Arabia, this document has been requested since August 1 to access “no matter what private or governmental place”, to public transport or to leave the country.

In Morocco, the vaccination passport is required since October to enter closed places such as hotels, restaurants, cafes, shops or gyms, to administrative places or to leave the country.

The same happens in Tunisia since December for access to administration offices, schools, cafes, banks, etc. And in Kenya, since December, for services, transport and public spaces.

In Italy, the health pass is necessary since January to access transport, hotels, restaurant terraces, fairs and congresses, swimming pools and gyms.

In France, from January 24, it is required for cinemas, bars, restaurants and interregional transport.

Some countries such as New Zealand or Australia only allow vaccinated travelers to enter their countries, as world tennis number one Novak Djokovic recently confirmed, who was deported and could not play the Australian Open.

The United States requires it for foreign travelers: from November for air arrivals and from January for land and sea arrivals. And if someone wants to travel to the Philippines, they will be able to do so from February 10, but only if they have had the injection before.
