U.S announced on Monday that will grant military and economic privileges to Qatar, fearing that Russia could cut off the supply of natural gas to Europe due to the crisis in Ukraine.
The president of the United States, Joe Biden, received the Qatari emir, Tamim bin Hamad al Zani, in the Oval Office and informed him that he planned to appoint Qatar “major non-NATO ally”, a special status that carries economic and military privileges.
“Qatar is a good friend, a capable partner that we can trust,” Biden said in making the announcement.
The White House has confirmed that Qatar is one of the world’s major natural gas producers with whom it has been in talks to help the European Union (EU) find alternatives to Russian supply from that power source.
Qatar is currently the fourth largest supplier of natural gas to the EU, with 5.2%, below Algeria (8%), Norway (16%) and far behind Russia (41%), on whom the community block also depends for the supply of crude oil, according to Eurostat data of 2019.
