Security Council meeting on Ukraine situation begins, Russia accuses them of “generating tension”

Russia was unable to get the meeting cancelled, however, the debate is not expected to crystallize into any agreement.

The Security Council began its meeting this Monday, number 8,960, to address the crisis in Ukraine, without Russia being able to avoid it due to a matter of procedure and despite having the support of China.

In the vote promoted by the Norwegian presidency to approve the agenda “Threats to international peace and security”, promoted by the United States, ten of the members of the Council voted in favor, two against and three abstained, so the debate will take place.

Chinese Ambassador to the UN Zhang Jun sided with Russia and said upon entering the meeting that his country supports “discreet diplomacy and not that of the microphone”, and pointed out that a meeting like today’s it will only serve to add gasoline to the tension.

Why is Ukraine the center of international tensions?

The debate is not expected to crystallize into any agreement, since Russia has the right of veto in the Council when approving any resolution, and could also count on the support of China, also with the right to veto, reported EFE.

Russian accusation after meeting

The Russian ambassador to the UN, Vassily Nebenzia, assured on Monday that with the convening of an open meeting of the Security Council on the Ukraine crisis, the United States intends to “generate hysteria” and “deceive the international community” with “unfounded accusations” about an alleged Moscow attack on that country.

Russia could not get the meeting to be canceled during a procedural vote – 10 votes in favor out of 15 – and the session began immediately. In contrast, the US ambassador to the UN, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, justified the meeting by stating that the deployment of more than 100,000 Russian soldiers on the border with Ukraine “threatens international security”, according to AFP.
