The leader of the opposition, Rui Rio, of the Social Democratic Party (PSD, centre-right), has obtained almost 28% of the votes. The polls predicted a technical tie between Socialists and Social Democrats.
The Socialist Party (PS) led by the current prime minister, António Costa, has won the legislative elections held this Sunday in Portugal, reaching the absolute majority. Specifically, the PS has achieved a 41.68% of votes and 117 seats with 99.13% of votes already counted. This is the second time that the Socialists have managed to overcome 116 seats, the absolute majority barrier in a Chamber of 230.
According to figures published by the Ministry of Internal Administration, the leader of the opposition, Rui Rio, dthe Social Democratic Party (PSD, centre-right), has obtained almost 28% of the votes and 71 seats.
These results collide with the polls released in the last days of the campaign, which came to give a technical tie between the two parties.
The far right Chega, who only had one deputy in Parliament, is placed as the third force with 7.15% of the votes and 12 seats.
The Left Block, third force in 2019 with almost 7%, now falls to fifth position, with 4.46%, and the coalition of communists and greens has achieved 4.39% of the vote.
The legislative elections held in Portugal have been a advance election forced by the failure of the last Socialist Budget.
