NATO will not intervene if Russia invades Ukraine. That is how clear the Secretary General of the Atlantic Alliance, Jens Stoltenberg, has been, rules out a confrontation with Russian troops.
“We do many things to help Ukraine strengthen its capacity, its ability to defend itself, but, I insist, Ukraine is not a NATO ally”, Jens Stoltenberg assured, coinciding with the British Government’s offer to NATO, which is willing to grant a “large deployment of troops” in Eastern Europe.
Liz Truss, UK Foreign Secretary, has assured that “it is very likely that Putin is looking to invade Ukraine“: “That is why we are doing everything possible through deterrence and diplomacy to urge him to desist.”
María José Pérez del Pozo, professor of International Relations at the UM, has assured that military structures “typical of the Cold War, are being applied, but we want Russia not to interpret it as such.”
In this sense, Pedro Baños, geopolitical analyst, insists that “everyone talks about seeking a diplomatic solution, but what is being done is showing the military muscle”. Capabilities that Russia also exhibits, although he reaffirms that he does not plan to invade Ukraine.
As explained by Fernando Arancón, director of ‘The World Order’, Russia would have a lot to lose: “It would have economic sanctions and human losses, the cost of invading any country“.
Meanwhile, tension continues to rise in Ukraine, with a population victim of political dizziness. Jesús Núñez, director of Iecah, explains it this way: “We have played with the Ukrainians to make them believe that Ukraine would enter the European Union, false. To make them believe that they would enter NATO, false. Those who suffer are the Ukrainians, because when the elephants fight, it is the ants that suffer”.
In addition, indicates Baños, “Europe we are still militarily and economically slaves of the United States. We in this conflict are only laying the battlefield and, in case of war, we would put the dead“.
In the midst of a political crisis, the former US president, Donald Trump, has entered the stage with his particular pre-campaign: “What Putin and Russia are doing with Ukraine never, never would have happened with me as president“.
