It was “non-state terrorist gangs” that carried out the attack.
Two projectiles hit Baghdad International Airport on Friday, causing damage to two planes that were parked and on the runway, without causing casualties or interrupting air traffic, official sources reported.
The Security Information Cell of the Iraqi Government indicated in a statement that the airport was the target of an attack during the early hours of this Friday with “six Katyusha-type rockets.”
He added that the projectiles hit the parking lot of the planes of the national airline Iraqi Airways, causing “damage to two planes that were parked on the tarmac.”
However, it does not specify how many rockets hit the airport, while a source from the Iraqi Interior Ministry said that at least two projectiles hit the facility and the other four were shot down.
The source indicated that it was “non-state terrorist gangs” that carried out the attack, although it did not target any group and so far no one has claimed responsibility for the action.
For his part, Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kazemi said in a statement that this attack “represents a new attempt to undermine Iraq’s reputation,” as well as a “danger to international aviation standards at Iraqi airports.”
In addition, “it spreads an image of uncertainty about the country’s internal security, since Baghdad International Airport is one of the flagship images of the country,” said the Iraqi politician.
In a statement, the Iraqi Airways company confirmed that the attack damaged the planes that “were parked in the vicinity of the airport and out of service”, and called on travelers to be “calm” since air traffic does not has been affected.
Baghdad airport has been the scene of drone and missile attacks on several occasions, especially against a base with a US presence of the international anti-jihadist coalition that is located on the perimeter.
At the beginning of this month, coinciding with the second anniversary of the assassination of the Iranian general, Qasem Soleimaní, and the number two of the pro-government armed group Popular Crowd, Abu Mahdi al Mohandes, in a selective US attack on the capital of Iraq, a base near the airport where coalition troops were present was the target of at least two attacks.
Although these attacks are not usually claimed and their authors are not captured, they are generally attributed to the pro-Iranian Shiite militias operating in Iraq, who demand the total withdrawal of foreign troops from the country. (I)
