Protests spread in Europe against COVID measures

Police used tear gas and water cannons to disperse a protest on Sunday in Brussels against vaccines against the coronavirus and the measures implemented to try to curb the spread of the pandemic.

Thousands of people turned out for the protest, some from France, Germany and other countries. The protesters chanted “Freedom! Liberty!” as they marched. There were also protests in Barcelona, Spain.

The marches followed those that took place on Saturday in various European capitals and also attracted thousands of supporters.

In Brussels, riot police repeatedly charged at protesters, who ignored calls to disperse. The officers fired powerful streams of water and a cloud of tear gas covered the Belgian capital.

One of the protest leaders used a megaphone to shout “Come on, people! Don’t let them take away your rights!”, while the policemen faced the protesters who threw projectiles and insults at them.

Some protesters harassed a team of video journalists covering the march for the Associated Press, pushing and threatening the journalists and damaging their equipment. One protester kicked a journalist and another tried to punch him.

In Barcelona, protesters marched and carried signs like one that read “It’s not a pandemic, it’s a dictatorship.”
