Amira Ozman, arrested by the Government of Sudan, is the president of the initiative “La Lqhr Alnsa” (No to the Oppression of Women).
The United Nations mission in Sudan condemned this Sunday the arrest of a prominent women’s rights activist in the African country, where multiple arrests of opponents of the coup have been taking place since the military coup three months ago.
The UN Integrated Transition Assistance Mission in Sudan (UNITAMS) said “outraged by the arrest of women’s rights defender Amira Ozman last night”, in a message posted on their social networks.
“The arrest and pattern of violence against women’s rights activists seriously threaten to reduce their political participation in Sudan, we call for their release,” added the representation of the international organization.

Ozman is president of the initiative “La Lqhr Alnsa” (No to the Oppression of Women), who also denounced on their networks that the activist was arrested during a raid by security forces at midnight on Saturday at her home, in a suburb of Khartoum.
“The troops took her to an unknown location and terrorized her family”, charged the organization, which warned that, as a result of complications from a recent accident, Ozman needs to take medication and continuous medical monitoring.
Sudan, an African country torn by conflict
The participation of women in the institutions of power and in the democratic transition process that began in Sudan in 2019 after the overthrow of dictator Omar al Bashir, has been, along with that of young people, one of the commitments of the actors of said process and a recurring demand from the international community.
The UN had previously warned the military authorities that control power in Sudan since the October coup over violence against women, such as when a month ago they asked to investigate the alleged rapes of 13 women and girls during a day of protests. against the riot (I)
