In recent weeks, the tension between Russia and Ukraine has increased to the point of raising the risk of war to a real possibility. How did we get to this point? The key is in the sending russian troops to the ukrainian border throughout 2021.
Already in December of last year, a month ago, the meeting of the G7 foreign ministers warned Putin that there would be “severe consequences” in case this increase in troops continues to occur.
Now, it is estimated that there more than 100,000 Russian soldiers prepared a few kilometers from Ukraine, something that has been verified through satellite images like the ones we can see in the video that accompanies these lines.
These troops are in Russian territory, but just 40 kilometers from the border, which could be considered as the prelude to a war. All in the context of a meeting between the United States and Russia in which Anthony Blinken, head of US diplomacy, has insisted that “there will be serious consequences and international condemnation“if Russia opts for the conflict.
The Kremlin’s version is that they are the attacked because NATO is expanding to the east. They intend to veto Ukraine’s entry into the alliance, but NATO does not accept that Putin dictates who can join and wants him to withdraw those troops near the border.
“We will not allow the hysteria of the West, that they do not try to sabotage the Minsk agreements”, warned Sergei Lavrov, head of Russian diplomacy.
In this conflict, the gas plays a fundamental role. There is a gas pipeline that joins Russia and Germany, through the Baltic, without going through Ukraine. Its operation depends on the German permit, which favors increasing tension.
