American Airlines cuts losses and warns that ómicron delays recovery

The group suffered a net loss of 2,000 million dollars in the year, much less than the negative 8,900 million registered in 2020.

American Airlines posted losses again in 2021, albeit lower than expected, and warned on Thursday that the omicron variant would delay the recovery of passenger flow to pre-pandemic levels.

The group suffered a net loss of 2,000 million dollars in the year, much less than the negative 8,900 million registered in 2020.

In the fourth quarter alone, the company lost 931 million.

Excluding one-off items, the loss was slightly lower than expected by analysts surveyed by Factset for both the year and the quarter.

“We have experienced periods of high travel demand, offset by periods of lower demand due to new variants of covid-19,” company chief Doug Parker said in a statement.

“This volatility has created the most challenging context in commercial aviation history for planning,” he added.

Among other things, the group had to face a significant increase in sick leave at the end of the year due to the omicron variant, which did not prevent it from experiencing its best performance in terms of respecting the schedules for a month of December. (I)
