Chinese President Xi Jinping warned that the confrontation between the great powers could have “catastrophic consequences”, in a videoconference speech addressed to the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos.
“History has shown time and time again that confrontation does not solve problems, it only invites catastrophic consequences,” Xi said, according to an official translation of the speech broadcast online.
The Davos Forum, considered the meeting place for the world’s business, political and civil society leaders, had to be canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic but some conferences will take place this week.
In 2017, the Chinese leader caused a stir in Davos by unexpectedly defending free trade and globalization at a time when Donald Trump’s rise to power in the United States raised fears of a protectionist resurgence.
On Monday, Xi Jinping recast himself as the champion of multilateralism and warned of global tensions.
“Our world today is far from peaceful. Rhetoric arousing hatred and prejudice abounds,” Xi Jinping said.
China, the world’s leading trading power, is promoting new regional free trade agreements.
