The authorities impeded the work of the media’s journalistic team.
The Qatari Television Network Al Jazeera denounced today that the Sudanese authorities have withdrawn the accreditation to its 24-hour channel Al Jazeera Mubasher, in addition to those of his correspondent and camera, after the coverage of popular protests against the ruling military junta in the African country.
“The Sudanese authorities announce the withdrawal of the accreditation of Al Jazeera Mubasher and prevent your team from working”, affirmed the Qatari corporation in a statement on its website.
According to the note, “the Ministry of Culture and Information withdrew the accreditations of the correspondent Mohamad Omar, and the cameraman Badawi Bashir under the pretext of unprofessional coverage of the Sudanese question, and of transmitting incorrect news that harms the interests of the country and its social fabric”.
“The Al Jazeera network condemns the decision of the Sudanese authorities, and invites them to reverse it and allow the channel to continue its journalistic work without hindrance or intimidation,” it added.
The note from Al Jazeera Media Network, according to its name in English, considered that the measure “It is a new attack on the media and freedom of the press, and calls on the international organizations that defend the rights of journalists to reject it”.
Al Jazeera is one of the few media outlets that broadcast live the demonstrations taking place in Sudan after the military coup d’état on October 25.
The chain had already denounced the arrest of several of its journalists in Sudan in recent months, including the director of his office in Khartoum, Al Musalami al Kabashi, who was arrested for three days last November and subjected to interrogation, also in connection with his coverage of the protests.
The demonstrations took place in Sudan after the military coup and since then more than 60 people have been killed and hundreds injured by security forces, according to the country’s Medical Committee. (I)
