Israel and Lebanon reach agreement on gas supply, according to media

This was reported by an Israeli television network.

This Saturday Israeli media reported that Israel and Lebanon reached an unprecedented agreement, mediated by the United States, for the supply of gas by the Jewish State.

Asked about this issue, the Israeli Foreign Ministry declined to comment on the matter for the time being.

The agreement, according to the Canal 12 Israel, was signed this weekend and provides for the shipment of natural gas by Israel through Jordan and Syria.

The person in charge of the negotiations would have been the adviser for energy security of the United States Department of State, Amos Hochstein, who also officiates as a negotiator in the indirect dialogue that Israel and Lebanon began in October 2020 to try to demarcate their maritime borders. , and so far has not borne fruit.

The Israeli channel’s report also pointed out that Russian President Vladimir Putin also participated in the management of this agreement, which would have as one of its objectives to offer Lebanon an alternative energy source to the one it receives from Iran.

On the other hand, the information about this agreement comes in the context of a deep energy crisis in the Arab country, which according to a report published this week by the NGO Human Rights Watch has faced widespread electricity blackouts of up to 23 hours a day in 2021 as a result of lack of fuel, making it difficult for hospitals and schools to function.

Israel and Lebanon, which do not maintain diplomatic relations and have fought several wars, share a very tense border where violent episodes occur relatively frequently. (I)
