The alleged Chinese agent had been linked to the already dismembered Chinese multi-party parliamentary group, “Chinese in Britain”, says the investigation.
The United Kingdom’s Secret Intelligence Service (interior), MI5, has warned that an agent operating for the Chinese Government has been working in the British Parliament with the aim of “undermine the processes” that are settled there, reported this Thursday the president of the House of Commons, Lindsay Hoyle.
Hoyle has sent a letter to MPs to warn them that a woman named Christine Lee had been “engaged in political interference activities on behalf of the Chinese Communist Party, interacting here with members of Parliament.”
In the letter sent, Hoyle, whom MI5 had previously contacted, notes that the alleged Chinese agent had been linked to the already dismembered Chinese multi-party parliamentary group, “Chinese in Britain”.
“I understand that the Speaker of the House has been contacted by MI5 and is now alerting MPs that there has been an agent of the Chinese Government active in Parliament, working as a Member of Parliament, obviously in order to undermine the processes that are taking place. here,” Conservative MP Iain Duncan Smith told a parliamentary session.
The Tory MP considered that “this is a matter of great concern.”
“Will this now lead to a serious reform of the accreditation procedure to the House of Commons, since it is clearly too lax, with what these people can access, either in multi-party parliamentary groups or as individuals?” leader of the Conservatives.
This politician also recalled that he himself had done “a lot” to help Chinese citizens born in Hong Kong to flee the communist regime and that, with the alleged interference of the agent, some of the names and personal data of those fleeing citizens could have exposed, with the consequent “risk” to their lives and those of their families.
