HRW accuses Jair Bolsonaro of undermining confidence in elections and harassing the Supreme Court

HRW denounced that the president sought to “discredit the electoral system” in Brazil with “unproven allegations of fraud.”

Human Rights Watch (HRW) denounced this Thursday in its annual report the attempts of the president of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro, to “undermine confidence” in the electoral system and “harass” the Supreme Court, which is investigating him in various criminal proceedings.

“Bolsonaro has threatened the democratic government in Brazil by trying to undermine confidence in the electoral system, freedom of expression and judicial independence,” the international human rights organization said.

HRW denounced that the president sought to “discredit the electoral system” in Brazil with “unproven allegations of fraud.”

In 2021, Bolsonaro launched a crusade against the current electronic voting system, praised by international observers and in operation since 1996, but the head of state considers it a source of pouting (fraud, self-interested manipulation of the vote).

The far-right leader even threatened not to recognize the result of the presidential elections next October, in which he will aspire to re-election, although the clear favorite is his biggest political adversary, former president Luiz InĂ¡cio Lula da Silva, if a system was not adopted. mixed with ballots.

Congress rejected that proposal, but both the Superior Electoral Court and the Supreme Court opened investigations into Bolsonaro for those unfounded attacks on the electronic polls.

In this context, HRW accused Bolsonaro of “harassing and trying to intimidate” the Supreme Court, which is also investigating him for alleged illegal interference with the Federal Police and for prevarication in a corruption case over a purchase of anticovid vaccines, among other issues.

The Bolsonaro Administration also tried, according to HRW, to send “at least 17 critics” to prison, although many of those cases were shelved and the law that protected those investigations, from the time of the military dictatorship (1964-1985), was revoked by The congress.

The entity also condemned the ruler’s insults to journalists and the “routine blocking of critics on the social networks that he uses to discuss matters of public interest, violating his rights to freedom of expression.”

HRW also highlighted that Bolsonaro “continued to ignore” health recommendations against the coronavirus pandemic and “promoting ineffective drugs” against covid-19, which has already caused 620,000 deaths and 22.5 million cases in the country.

And he rejected projects to block the demarcation of new indigenous lands, which “continue to suffer illegal invasions,” and the government’s actions to “weaken the application” of environmental laws, “fostering criminal networks that are driving deforestation.” (I)
