Priests not vaccinated against COVID-19 will not be able to give communion in an Italian diocese

Italy reached its record for COVID-19 infections this Thursday, when it reported 220,000 new infections.

Unvaccinated priests will not be able to give communion in the diocese of Teano-Calvi (Caserta, southern Italy), according to its bishop, who has also limited the activities of the parishes due to the rapid spread of the omicron variant.

A circular issued by the bishop, Giacomo Cirulli, prohibits “the distribution of the Eucharist by unvaccinated priests, deacons, religious and laity” and provides “the suspension, from Sunday January 9 until further communication, of all activities pastoral, catechetical and face-to-face training, “local media report.

“During the celebration, the hosts on the altar must be kept strictly covered in the sacred vessels provided,” says the directive, in which the bishop recalls the words of Pope Francis, assuring that “getting vaccinated with doses authorized by the competent authorities is an act of love”.

The bishop of Teano-Calvi thus joins the bishop of Salerno (south), Andrea Bellandi, who a few days ago issued a similar circular in which he invited priests to scrupulously observe hygiene measures and prohibited anti-vaccine priests from giving communion .

Italy reached its record for COVID-19 infections this Thursday, when it reported 220,000 new infections, bringing total cases in the country to more than 7 million since February 2020 and deaths approaching 139,000. (I)
