COVID-19: Ómicron is already the dominant variant in Colombia, says the Minister of Health

The omicron variant of covid-19 is already the dominant one in Colombia, according to the Minister of Health, Fernando Ruiz, so it is expected that the number of infections of the disease will continue to increase.

“As we had anticipated, as of January 2, more than 60% of the genomic map of covid-19 in Colombia is dominated by omicron. This implies adapting guidelines to the clinical characteristics of the variant,” wrote the head of the Health portfolio on Twitter.

A recent report by the National Institute of Health (INS) pointed out that omicron, whose variant has a higher speed of contagion although studies are still not conclusive as to whether it is more deadly, is already circulating in various parts of the country.

“Variants gamma, delta and the one of interest mu continue to be the most prevalent in the country. In addition, the circulation of the omicron variant in Atlántico, Antioquia, Bogotá, Bolívar, Córdoba, Magdalena, Quindío and Valle del Cauca is confirmed,” he said. the INS.

Infections in Colombia have been increasing in the last ten days, a fact that the authorities attribute to the omicron, and yesterday 16,259 new positive cases were confirmed, the highest number since July 19, when the country registered 16,455.

To date, the pandemic leaves 5,219,633 positive cases and 130,140 deaths in the country.

Last Monday, after the New Year’s weekend, the country resumed the vaccination rate that it had in 2021 and 247,493 serums were applied, of which 103,623 correspond to second doses and 12,815 to the single-dose formula of the pharmaceutical company Janssen.

With this in the country, of 50 million inhabitants, 64.98 million doses have been applied and 28.46 million people have their complete vaccination scheme while 3.42 million have received a booster dose.

According to the Ministry of Health, as of January 5, the country had an availability of 44.35% of the 10,946 existing ICU beds.

Of the occupied ICU beds, “748 correspond to confirmed cases of covid-19; 321 to suspected cases; 5,022 to other diseases and a remaining 4,855 are available,” explained the director of Provision of Services of the Ministry of Health, Manuel Delgado .

Antioquia with 22%; Tolima with 27.62%; and Bolívar with 29.07%, are the places with the highest availability of beds to ICUs.

Due to the increase in infections, authorities in several towns suspended the celebration of popular festivals and festivals that are traditionally celebrated at the beginning of the year. (I)
