This requirement does not apply to fully vaccinated people who have had the disease.
Singapore authorities indicated this Wednesday that they will require the booster dose in adults to recognize that they have completed the full schedule of vaccination against covid-19 before the start of a new wave for the new omicron variant.
“To maximize the level of protection of our population against the omicron variant, we will require the booster dose to maintain the status of fully vaccinated,” the Ministry of Health said in a statement.
As of February 14, those over 18 years of age must receive a booster vaccination within 270 days after the second dose in order to maintain the status of vaccinated with the full schedule.
This requirement does not apply to fully vaccinated people who have passed the covid-19.
Ministry experts recommend a booster vaccine from the fifth month for those who have been inoculated with the full regimen of messenger RNA vaccines such as Pfizer or Moderna and three months if they are conventional vaccines such as Sinovac.
Although they are detecting about 200 cases a day on average, the authorities indicated that they expect a new wave soon due to the omicron variant, which is more contagious but less serious than the delta.
The city-state Ministry of Health pointed out that, although omicrons are less serious and there is a majority of Singaporeans vaccinated, the greater contagion of the new variant will increase the number of admitted to the ICU, increasing the pressure on the health system.
Singapore, which accumulates more than 281,000 infections and 832 deaths from covid-19, has vaccinated 87% of its population with the full schedule, while 42% have received the booster dose. (I)
