The Association of Agricultural Producers of Nuevo Horizonte de Zarumilla, belonging to the district of Chirimoto, was able to increase and double the monthly commercialization of its guinea pigs slaughtered to supply the main restaurants in the province of Rodríguez de Mendoza, in Amazons. This is thanks to the co-financing of its Business Plan, in charge of the Avanzar Rural project of Agro Rural, executing unit of the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (Midagri).
“In 2015 we organized ourselves with the expectation of carrying out an articulated work of mutual aid between the family producers that we make up this association, in order to achieve a change in our activities related to the field. Currently, we are 15 families that are promoting ourselves through the production and commercialization of guinea pigs ”, indicated Benito Trigoso, beneficiary and partner of the Association of Agricultural Producers of Nuevo Horizonte de Zarumilla.
He added that, in 2020, before COVID-19, the organization had only one production shed and 620 guinea pigs as a total population.
“We were seriously affected until we found out that the Avanzar Rural project, of Agro Rural in the Rodríguez de Mendoza zonal office, was identifying organizations for the formulation of Business plans. We participate in the contest, among many other associations, so that they can co-finance our plan and, in this way, strengthen our activity in the face of one of the largest global crises in our history, ”Trigoso noted.
“The Local Committee for the Assignment of Resources of the project declared the winner in the month of December 2020 to the Business Plan called Increasing the competitiveness of the business of production and sale of guinea pigs of the Association of Agricultural Producers of Nuevo Horizonte de Zarumilla, which proposed the increase of sheds and the installation of a plant for the slaughter of guinea pigs, thus offering a product with added value ”, highlighted Rogelio Huamani Carbajal, executive director of Agro Rural.
For his part, Benito Trigoso assured that today, after 1 year of participation in this project, They have gone from having an average monthly sale of 83 to 177 guinea pigs. In addition, to date they have seven production sheds and a total population of 990 guinea pigs.
“It has been possible to increase the commercialization of slaughter and we are already working to complete the construction of our collection center, which will be of great help to improve the management of slaughter guinea pigs, give uniformity to the product, ensure its quality, reduce the risks of contamination and condition the product for packaging and respective distribution ”, he stated.
At another point, Huamani Carbajal remarked that “one year after the implementation of the Avanzar Rural project began, the demands of 3,295 agricultural producers of family farming in the mountains and jungle of Las regions of Amazonas, Ancash, Cajamarca, Lima and San Martin”.
