The military man died due to a perforation in the thorax after being attacked by an axis deer, which circulates in the gardens of the presidential residence.
A sergeant of the presidential guard was gored to death by a deer that is part of the group of wild animals that circulate freely in the gardens of the official residence of Paraguayan President Mario Abdo Benítez, a military source reported Tuesday.
The military man, named Víctor Isasi, died due to a perforation in the chest, after being attacked frontally in the early hours of the morning by an axis deer from India, revealed the military spokesman, Colonel Víctor Urdapilleta.
In the presidential house, 10 hectares, near the center of Asunción, some native species freely inhabit, among these rheas, macaws and a mboreví (South American tapir), in addition to the deer.
“The security camera shows that (the sergeant) enters the area where these animals are and takes an action (raises his hand) that causes the deer to react,” Urdapilleta explained.
The victim’s relatives will receive compensation, the spokesperson said.
Frederic Bauer, Director of Wildlife at the Ministry of the Environment, said that the axis deer is part of a breeding litter on a government farm in San José de los Arroyos, about 110 km east of the capital.
The official admitted that “it is not appropriate to have exotic animals in captivity, but there is no regulation” and assured that those responsible for the presidential house consulted the Ministry of the Environment before incorporating it into their gardens. (I)
