Sony Corp’s film studio will delay the release of the Marvel superhero film “Morbius,” to April 1, the company said in a statement.
The movie starring Jared Leto has been postponed multiple times during the COVID-19 pandemic. The last scheduled release date was January 28.
For theater operators, the delay is a setback as they try to recover from prolonged closures during the COVID-19 crisis.
Networks such as AMC Entertainment, Cinemark Holdings Inc and Cineworld Group have been celebrating the success of Sony’s “Spider-Man: No Road Home” ticket sales. Although “No Way Home” is still in theaters, operators have few other big titles on their schedules until spring.
The rapidly spreading omicron variant has raised new concerns about whether audiences will feel comfortable going to theaters during the pandemic.
