Peru registers the highest inflation in 13 years

This Sunday it was published that the index of Peru’s consumer prices registered the highest increase in the last 13 years, closing 2021 at 6.43% mainly due to the price increases in rents and fuels.

The National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) reported that the annual rate for 2021 is based on the increase of 13.27% in the area of ​​housing rental, fuel and electricity, as well as in that of food and beverages that rose 7 , 97%.

Inflation in 2021 doubled the Peruvian Executive’s target range, set at 3%, and tripled the 1.97% annual inflation reported in 2020.

In 2021, the consumer price index grew at a monthly rate of 0.52%, with December being the highest month in the second semester with 0.78%.

Thus, the products that had an impact on annual inflation were propane gas for domestic use (51%), natural gas for housing (27%), residential electricity (11.6%) and rent in residential apartments (2.8 %).

Similarly, in the food and beverage sector there were the largest increases in bottled vegetable oil (63.5%), Chinese onion (42.6%), parakeet fish (37.2%), Italian tomato (33.9%) , corvina (26.6%) and gutted chicken (24.3%).

In the transport and communications group, there were significant increases in vehicle liquefied petroleum gas (78%), domestic airfare (59.4%) and international (39.4%) and interprovincial bus passengers (19.6%) ).

However, some products and services recorded decreases, such as, for example, enrollment for non-state education, which fell by 18.9% taking into account that school and higher education has been non-face-to-face since the beginning of the pandemic, in March 2020, to date.

The INEI report also pointed out some of the Peruvian cities where the price index registered the greatest variations, such as the Amazonian Chachapoyas (12.5%), the Andean Huaraz (11.9%), the jungle Puerto Maldonado (11.1%). ), the southern Moquegua (10.3%) and the coastal Chiclayo (10.1%) and Chimbote (10%).
