The draft defines the initial rules for financing nuclear and gas power plants from EU funds as part of the Community’s energy transformation and the fight against climate change. Until now, the European Union considered only renewable energy sources to be sustainable. However, they are not efficient and stable enough to meet the demand inside the Community.
To receive EU funding, a new nuclear power plant project will have to be approved for construction by 2045. Existing power plants will have to obtain a permit to extend their operation until 2040. The states will also be obliged to guarantee safe disposal of waste and safe demolition of power plants being shut down.
Green gas power plants only temporarily
gas will be considered green only temporarily. If their carbon dioxide emissions do not exceed 100 grams per kilowatt of energy produced. The end of the transition period for energy obtained from gas was set for December 31, 2030. Installations that receive a building permit before that date, under certain conditions, will be able to emit up to 270 grams of carbon dioxide.
France and Poland, among others, are demanding recognition of energy as sustainable sources. The final design of the so-called the EU taxonomy of financing sustainable development is due to be presented in January.
Orlen plans to launch the first nuclear power plant by 2030. “Atom is the future of Poland”
Meanwhile, in Poland, PKN Orlen and Synthos Green Energy signed an investment agreement at the beginning of December providing for the creation of a joint venture Orlen Synthos Green Energy. Its goal will be the development and construction of small and micro atomic reactors. The first nuclear power plant in the SMR technology is to be built in Poland by 2030.
– The investment in micro and small nuclear reactors will allow for further intensive development of the entire Orlen group and will help to significantly reduce our carbon dioxide emissions – said Obajtek. More in the article below:
