Argentina designates the Aragua train as an “terrorist” organization

The Ministry of Security of Argentina has registered the Venezuelan band Aragua train in the official list of groups “linked to acts of terrorism.” This resolution was announced on Tuesday and follows the same line as a similar measure adopted by USA.

According to a statement from the Ministry, this decision responds to intelligence reports that alert about the threat represented by this Organization for National Security.

The Aragua Train, a band founded in Venezuela in 2014, is involved in criminal activities such as kidnappings, robberies, drug trafficking, prostitution, extortion, illegal gold exploitation and people trafficking.

This group has expanded its operations to several countries in Latin America.

The Argentina resolution is announced six days after the US government, under the presidency of Donald Trump, designated the Aragua train as a “global terrorist organization”together with six Mexican posters and the MS-13 gang.

The Argentine president, Javier Milei, has made clear his affinity with Trump, with whom he met last week at the CPAC Conservative Summit held in Washington.

In an international context, last Monday Argentina refrained from voting a UN resolution that requested the withdrawal of Russian troops in Ukraine. Despite this position, Milei has repeatedly expressed his support for Volodimir Zelensky, with whom he met in January.

Opposition leaders in Argentina interpreted this gesture as a change in government position towards conflict in Ukraine, aligning more with US foreign policy. However, Argentine Foreign Minister Gerardo Werthein insisted that “he did not change his mind.”
