A few months ago, Petroperú President Alejandro Narváez said that the new Talara refinery (NRT) was in the integrated operational optimization stage. That is, all its units produced fuels to meet the demand of the national market. However, the state oil company has been receiving a series of questions regarding the operation of the flexicoking unit (FCK).
Given this situation, from Petroperú they clarified that the NRT “has been designed to process both light and heavy crude, adjusting its load according to market conditions to maximize profitability.” In other words, when light crude is more profitable or has a price similar to the heavy in the international market, the company prefers to reduce the use of the FCK so that the final product does not rise.
In the event that the heavy crude presents a significantly lower cost, the FCK It is activated to take advantage of this operational advantage. Recall that this technology of the company USA Exxon Mobil allows to obtain a greater production of liquid fuels of high commercial value from oil waste.
“Thanks to its advanced technology and high operational flexibility, the NRT can process a wide variety of crude , allowing the refinery to adjust to market fluctuations and optimize their income, “they said.
Talara Refinery: High operational flexibility
During the last press conference offered by Petroperú, its general manager Óscar Vera, revealed that the FCK unit was in a “stand by” process because they had no heavy load since they prioritized the processing of light crude oil. However, it made it clear that there are no damage and that the time to carry out cleaning works, as well as technological improvements.
“What’s happening? In the market, heavy crude are costing the same as light, then, to us, which we are looking for a greater refiner margin, we buy the crude that will give it a greater realization, that is, the one that generates more light products like gasoline Diesel or GLR, “he emphasized.
Finally, he stressed that flexibility allows them to be more competitive and explained that the starting process of the flexicking unit can take up to 10 days, a procedure that is reported before the supervisory agency of energy and mining investment (Osinergmin) and the Ministry of Energy and mines.
“We have nothing to hide. We are happy that we can process light raw that gives greater margin of refining. At the time they come cheaper heavy raw, we will process,” he said.
