The United States suspends the issuance of visas in its consulate in Bogotá

The United States announced on Sunday the suspension of the issuance of visas in its consulate in Bogotá as part of the reprisals against the Colombian government for having refused to receive two deportation flights from Colombian migrants.

The United States Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, ordered “the immediate suspension of the issuance of visas in the consular section of the United States Embassy in Bogotá,” the State Department announced in a statement.

The US government justified this measure for “the refusal” of the president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, to “accept two repatriation flights that he had previously authorized.”

According to the State Department, Rubio also approved the prohibition to travel to the United States of “the people and their families who were responsible for the interference of US repatriation flights.”

“The measures will continue until Colombia fulfills their obligations to accept the return of their own citizens. The United States will not reverse when it comes to defending its national security interests, ”concluded the State Department.

This statement was issued after the president of the United States, Donald Trump, announced this Sunday the imposition of 25 % tariffs on all Colombian products, a rate that will rise to 50 % within a week, and the revocation of visas for the high positions of the Colombian government and their families.

In addition, the president ordered reinforced inspections in customs and border controls for “all” Colombian citizens and goods, and the “total imposition” of fiscal, banking and financial sanctions to Colombia.

In response, Gustavo Petro announced that Colombia will also apply tariffs of 25 % of imported American products.
