The journalist of the weekly “Die zeit” Ulrich Ladurner points out in his article at the beginning that the ban on turning from the border of people who are in danger of death, torture or loss of freedom in the country of origin, is the basic principle of the Geneva Convention of 1951 regarding refugee status.
The author reminded that on Wednesday (29.01) the CDU/CSU candidate for German Chancellor Friedrich Merz forced the German resolution in the German parliament, which talks to the residence of immigrants. The Bundestag decision was criticized at the informal meeting of the EU interior ministers on Friday in Warsaw. The German interior minister Nancy Faeser participating in the peak said that she was given to understanding that trust in Germany was shaken.
Polish proposals go further than Merz
The ministers present in Warsaw received from the Polish presidency materials for discussions, which “even Merz would not dare to submit,” reads “Die Zeit”. The authors of the materials ask the question whether the Geneva Convention is still feasible.
“A deepened discussion should be conducted about these rules,” we read in the Polish document. This means – “Die Zeit” writes – that they should be questioned. “(Convention) was created at the end of World War II, compared to modern times in a completely different geopolitical situation” – quotes the Polish editors of the document, interpreting this sentence as the admission that the convention “has ceased to be valid”.
Ladurner pointed out that in expert circles a long time discussed this topic, but now the discussion “has gone to the level of European governments”.
Poland and other countries reach for extraordinary funds
Journalist “Die Zeit” writes that the content of the document is not actually a surprise, because in recent years the whole series of EU countries began to use “extraordinary means”.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, who “is certainly not a right -wing populist”, temporarily and territorially suspended the right to asylum, justifying this hybrid war on the part of Bia³orusia and Russia. Finland, Włoch, Austria and Denmark, as well as Więgier, reach for radical methods.
“Materials for the discussion of the Polish Presidency properly reflect reality and draw conclusions from it,” Ladurner said. The effects of “in -depth discussion” are currently difficult to predict. The EU probably will not say the Geneva Convention, but it will stop using it, which is a “realistic perspective.” In this situation, Merz’s proposals regarding the limitation of the influx of immigrants can count on the European level for acceptance.
The Polish document reserves that refugees who can prove that returning to their countries of origin threatens their lives, EU countries will continue to protect – we read in the conclusion of an article published on Saturday (1.02.) In the online edition of the weekly.
