The surprise factor and the lack of precedents of similar offensives during the war, are the keys to understanding the lightning attacks that have provoked the Ukrainian incursion into the Kursk region of Russia. An offensive with which Kyiv has occupied 1,000 square kilometers. As Jesús Núñez, co-director of IECAH, points out: “The surprise factor on the tactical level has been achieved by Ukraine. Its actions expose vulnerabilities from Russia”.

Zelensky’s soldiers are already in Suzda, one of the largest towns in the region, which has had to be completely evacuated, like many others in the region. In fact, various Telegram channels claim that the explosions resulting from the fighting are heard from the city of Kursk. This has prompted Russia to evacuate more than 120,000 people from the region.

However, Kyiv says its aim is not to invade, as Georgii Tykhyi, spokesman for the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has stated: “Unlike Russia, Ukraine does not need other people’s property.”

The Ukrainian army also seems unstoppable, having captured 74 towns covering more than 1,000 square kilometres. As the offensive progresses, they are taking prisoners who are heading directly to their leader, Vladimir Putin: “We demand an exchange for the Azov soldiers.” Núñez assures that “the most that Ukraine can hope for, and therefore the success of the operation lies there, is that Russia may have to divert units “Which are now acting in the Donbass area (Kursk)”

This raid has causedVladimir Putin’s anger and according to various analysts, a turning point in a conflict that has lasted more than 900 days. Professor of International Relations Pedro Rodríguez reaffirms this position: “It’s not just another battle, it’s a way to end the war.”
