The American president, the democrat Joe Bidensaid in an interview broadcast on Sunday on television that his predecessor and now Republican presidential candidate, Donald Trumprepresented a “real danger to the security of USA United” if they win the November 5 elections.
“Listen to me carefully. If (Trump) wins (…) this election, look what will happen. It is dangerous. It is a real danger to the security of the United States,” the 81-year-old president told CBS News, who has given up running for a second term and passed the torch to his vice president, Kamala Harris.
“We are at an inflection point in world history … and democracy is the key,” said Biden, who has kept a low profile since his retirement after his poor performance in the first televised debate against Trump in June revived fears about his age and mental capacity, sparking calls for him to step aside among Democrats.
In the brief television interview, taped at the White House last week, Biden appeared frail but coherent, admitting again that he failed in the debate but stressing that in terms of health he has “no serious problems.”
Explaining his departure, he said other Democratic politicians running for re-election feared it would hurt their chances and added that his only priority was to prevent Trump from returning to power.
Three weeks after that debate, Biden announced on July 21 that he would not run in the November 5 election and that Harris would take his place.
“A critical issue for me remains – and this is no joke – maintaining this democracy,” Biden said.
