This Sunday marks the 4th anniversary of the gigantic explosion. 2,750 tons of ammonium nitrate devastated the port of Beirut. 217 people died and 7,000 were injured.Four years later, the victims’ families denounce the authorities’ abandonment.

On August 4, 2020, Beirut was shaken. A black cloud rose into the sky while the shockwave flattened buildings, shattered windows and left entire streets in ruins.

The cause: a huge amount of ammonium nitrate stored in an unsafe manner. Helene Ata’s brother was one of the 217 victims. “His family cannot accept that such a crime goes unpunished”.

The investigation about what happened has been stagnant since 2021But the victims and their families continue to fight tirelessly. They demand that those responsible be held accountable and that their pain be finally redressed. Although it happened four years ago, the impact of this catastrophe is tangible to this day. Beirut is still struggling to heal its wounds.
