Egg prices could skyrocket across EU, Polish Chamber of Commerce warns of empty shelves

The European Union wants changes to egg stamping. The industry believes that this will be disadvantageous for it. A side effect may also be shortages on store shelves and price increases – warns the Polish Chamber of Commerce.

Egg stamping will have to take place at the place of production, according to regulations designed by the European Commission. Currently, most Polish producers do it in sorting plants, at the packaging stage. If Polish authorities adopt EU regulations, it will be associated with “significant disruptions to the operation of the internal market” –

From a trade perspective, this will result in a shortage of eggs and products containing eggs on the shelves, as well as a significant increase in their prices.

– adds PIH. The organization emphasizes, however, that in this case the Polish legislator does not necessarily have to adapt to European regulations.

Eggs to Be More Expensive? Industry Warns of Changes

Marking eggs in a place other than production will be possible if certain criteria are met. If these are met, stamping will be allowed at the first packing plant to which the eggs are delivered. The Ministry of Agriculture does not plan to establish regulations that would allow this –

The president of the Polish Chamber of Commerce, Maciej Ptaszyński, believes that if the prices of eggs and products containing them increase, then in the long term it will become a pro-inflationary factor. The organization argues that there is no need to change the current regulations, because the procedures already guarantee full traceability of eggs. And this is the essence of the EU regulation.

There are also arguments against the idea of marking eggs during production. According to PIH, doing this when the eggs are still dirty and unsorted has consequences for the quality of the stamp, which will be incomplete or illegible if it is placed on an uncleaned shell.

Will the change in regulations affect the image of Polish egg producers?

The Polish Chamber of Commerce believes that changing the current regulations would be disadvantageous for egg producers not only in terms of technology and economy, but also for image reasons. As PIH writes, Polish companies have a good reputation on the European and global market, and the change designed by the EU carries the risk of losing it.

– Poland is one of the largest egg producers in Europe. In 2022, the value of Polish egg exports amounted to PLN 2.6 billion. Let’s not change the standards that work effectively and that are appreciated in other markets – emphasizes Maciej Ptaszyński.
