Ursula von der Leyen is re-elected as president of the European Commission

The president of the European Comission, Ursula von der Leyenwon the confidence of the European Parliament on Thursday to continue in office for another five years, thanks to the support of 401 MEPs in a 720-seat hemicycle.

The 401 votes in favour put her 41 above the majority she needed to be confirmed, which was finally set at 360 due to the absence of Junts MEP Toni Comín. 284 MEPs voted against, 15 abstained and seven cast spoiled votes.

In contrast, the Patriots for Europe, the Left and the Europe of Sovereign Nations, all three at the ideological extremes of the European parliamentary spectrum, voted against.

The Conservatives and Reformists, for their part, gave their MEPs a free vote, although they said they expected a large majority of their own to vote against. Party sources said after the vote that Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s Brothers of Italy would have voted against.

The Chairwoman He now has the rest of the summer to put together his team of commissioners and the portfolio he will give to each one, a selection that he is expected to present during the month of September.
