Former US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, one of the most important figures in the Democratic Party, suggested on Wednesday that the president, Joe Bidenshould rethink his candidacy for the re-election.
“It is up to the president to decide whether he is going to run. We are all encouraging him to make that decision, because time is running out.” she said in statements to the MSNBC program ‘Morning Joe’ when asked if Biden has her explicit support.
The 84-year-old California lawmaker is so far the most senior member of the party to be asked to consider whether to continue in the electoral race against former Republican President Donald Trump (2017-2021), who has gained strength after the electoral debate on June 27.
Pelosi stressed that Biden is respected within the party but underlined that people want him to make a decision, a message that contrasts with the explicit support given on Tuesday by a significant part of the Democratic leadership on Capitol Hill.
The former House Speaker seemed to overlook the fact that the Democratic leader has stressed in recent days not only that he does not plan to withdraw his candidacy, but that in his opinion he is the best positioned to beat Trump.
“I want him to do whatever he decides to do. Whatever he decides, let’s go with it.“Pelosi said, hinting that Biden might be given the time to take charge of the NATO summit, which runs until Thursday in Washington and which the president is hosting.
Calls for Biden to pull out of the race have emerged after his face-to-face meeting with Trump in late June, in which the Democrat appeared hesitant, unable to finish some sentences or refute the Republican’s lies.
So far, a dozen lower-ranking Democratic congressmen have expressed their doubts that Biden is their best option to win on November 5, but he has also won the support of the Hispanic caucus of the Democrats in Congress and also the African-American caucus.
According to the latest polls, Trump is ahead of Biden. The average of polls conducted by the website FiveThirtyEight shows that he has 42.1% of voting intentions, 2.1 percentage points more than his rival.
