This was my third visit to the German capital. I first went there as a 20-year-old in 2012. The prices seemed outrageous to me compared to those in Poland. I was in Berlin for the second time at the beginning of 2019. I thought that the prices of products in Polish stores were getting closer to those in Germany, and yet our earnings had not increased that much. During my third visit to the German capital, I found that the prices there were almost no different from those in Warsaw. What’s more, when I visited popular drugstores, I often noticed that some products were even more expensive in Poland.
A Pole pays 10 zlotys, and a German 3.50.
Recently, the topic of these surprising differences in prices was raised on social media. It turns out that a certain popular ice cream is more expensive in Poland by several dozen percent. A Pole pays 10 zlotys, while a German pays only 3.50 for the same product. The matter has outraged many people.
Polish women pay 409 PLN for the same product, and German women 242 PLN. And apparently the Germans are so jealous of us Deman//shutterstock
Interestingly, Polish women often shop in German drugstores. This is because some cosmetics are much cheaper there. As I mentioned, I noticed this during my April trip to Berlin. In one drugstore I bought a shampoo for 2 euros. Converted to złoty, this gives 8.51 PLN. In Poland, I pay 15-16 PLN for the same product.
My friend, who is a makeup artist, doesn’t hide the fact that she orders some products from German perfumery websites. For one of her clients’ favorite foundations in Poland, she has to pay 409 zlotys. On the German website of the same chain, she pays 57 euros for this product. Converted to zlotys, this is 242 zlotys, and shipping is free.
Germans envy Poles? I wonder what…
The phenomenon is incredibly frustrating. But also funny in the context of PiS propaganda, which for years has been convincing Poles that “Germany is jealous of our development and standard of living”. This was said by politicians whose government is largely responsible for the drastic increase in prices in our country… Because I really don’t know what the Germans would be so jealous of. Higher prices while at the same time much lower wages? This sounds really absurd.
