Georgia’s EU accession process suspended. They will lose tens of millions of euros. “It’s sad to see”

– The European Union is reducing support for the Georgian government – EU ambassador Paweł Herczyński said at a conference in Tbilisi. Brussels is concerned about the actions of the Georgian government. In the background is a controversial law that is supposed to be modeled on Russian law.

The European Union Ambassador to Georgia, Paweł Herczyński, quoted by Georgian media, recalled that on June 27 in Brussels, the leaders of EU countries decided to suspend the process of Georgia’s integration with the EU. The European Union is watching the actions of the Georgian government with concern. This includes the adoption of a law restricting the rights of organizations and the media. This is the so-called law on foreign influence.

Media: Georgia has changed its attitude to anti-Western

The adoption of this document led to protests by thousands of Georgian citizens lasting over a month. According to EU politicians and the Georgian opposition, the law is modelled on Russian law. The portal writes directly in the title of its article that Georgia’s accession was suspended after Tbilisi’s attitude changed “to anti-Western”. Brussels is also critical of other actions by the ruling Georgian Dream party and its leader, businessman Bidzina Ivanishvili. The party, in turn, claims that the new law is “needed to prevent foreign interference”.

Tbilisi will not receive 30 million euros for defense from the European Union

The decision to suspend the integration process will also have financial consequences. Georgia will not receive 30 million euros from the European Union for defense. According to Ambassador Herczyński, this money will be gradually transferred to the development of civil society and independent media.

– How quickly Georgia will become a member of the European Union depends on the Georgians themselves – said the EU ambassador and reminded that parliamentary elections will be held in Georgia in October. – It is sad to see EU-Georgia relations at such a bad point, when they could be the best in history – said Herczyński, quoted by Politico.
