Senior Hamas official Khaled Meshal, who headed the group’s political wing between 1996 and 2017, said Thursday that the destruction of the Gaza Strip is the inevitable price that the “Palestinian resistance” has to pay for the liberation.

Gaza is being destroyed at the base of massacres. I think every fair person sees that this is true (…) but it is part of our people’s march towards liberation, an important and historic movement towards liberation,” Meshal said in an interview for the Arabic version of the British television network Sky News.

In that same interview, Meshal also acknowledged that Iran has played its role in this crisis as a political and military power in the region, while others are simply “waiting for the departure of the combat machines.”

Meshal, with a view to a future transition once the war ends, has defended throughout the conflict the need to A major national deal for the Gaza Stripbetween Palestinian factions, including Hamas, which “cannot be excluded in any way.”
