A historic decision by the European Union. Member states bypassed Hungary’s veto on aid to Ukraine

Hungary was the only country blocking funds from the Peace Fund, where money from frozen Russian assets is kept. Poland was to receive EUR 450 million from it for supporting the armament of Ukraine. According to the findings, the heads of foreign ministries from 26 European Union countries found a way to bypass Hungary’s veto.

– Thanks to the consistent actions of 26 member states, despite Hungary’s obstruction, the first interest on frozen Russian assets in the amount of at least EUR 1.2 billion will go to the heroic defenders of Ukraine this summer – said Minister of Foreign Affairs Radosław Sikorski in an interview with RMF FM radio. As the station emphasized, “the decision is unprecedented in terms of the mechanism used and the scale of the measures.” Let us recall that Russia has EUR 210 billion in frozen assets.

The foreign ministers of the European Union countries also approved the imposition of the 14th sanctions package on Russia, which provides for, among other things, a ban on the re-export of Russian liquefied gas from European ports.

Hungary has blocked funds from the Peace Fund since the beginning of 2023. Already then, there were voices that other European Union member states could make the decision without the participation of this country. Similar considerations concerned the decision to provide Ukraine with a financial package of EUR 18 billion.
