Pompeii will teach archeology, volcanology and history to children with a museum

The archaeological area of Pompeiithe city devastated by Vesuvius in 79 BC, began this Wednesday the construction of a museum dedicated exclusively to children, who will be able to learn archeologyvolcanology or history in a space that will open its doors in 2025.

Minors will be able to visit “a stimulating environment to know and discover through play, experimentation and creative experience, the extraordinary history of Pompeii, Vesuvius and the Roman era”explained the management of the archaeological park.

With the planting of a walnut tree in memory of the children of Pompeii, the director of the park, Gabriel Zuchtriegel, accompanied by 100 children, kicked off the construction of a museum that will be located in the ‘Casina Rosellino’, a 19th century building with a garden of about 1,800 square meters.

The enclave is located on Via de la Abundancia, the main street of the archaeological complex, in a part that has not yet been excavated, in insula 5 of Regio II, one of the nine neighborhoods that divide the city.

In the garden of the complex, where there is a sculpture of a horse by the Italian artist Mimmo Paladino, 25 interactive exhibitions, a teaching classroom, a theater and reception services with bookstores will be installed, while inside the building there will be a small training room.

It will also be present “nature and the environment and musical events, developing a lasting connection with cultural heritage”, the organization explained in a statement.

“A museum or an archaeological park that wants to be a large and serious institution must think about an offer for the little ones, who must be received with the same respect and attention as adults,” Zuchtriegel said.

Currently, the archaeological park carries out some activities dedicated to children, such as special itineraries and workshops in the domus dedicated to the little ones, which take place on the first Sunday of each July and two Sundays a month starting in October, before that the museum will definitively open at the beginning of 2025.
