The European countries that received the most asylum seekers in March

Germany, Italy, Spain and France were, in that order, the four European Union countries that received the most asylum seekers last March, 75% of the total, reported the Eurostat statistics office.

Germany received 16,430 people seeking asylum in the EU for the first time, followed by Italy (15,115), Spain (13,255) and France (10,540).

In March 2024, across the EU there were 73,445 applications for international protection, a decrease of 12% compared to March 2023 (83,915).

In addition, there were 7,050 people who had already applied for asylum in one country and applied again in another, a decrease of 6% compared to March 2023 (7,475).

By nationality, the most numerous citizens to request asylum were Syrians (10,470), Afghans (5,735) and Venezuelans (5,440).

In March 2024, the total number of first-time asylum seekers in the EU was 16.4 per 100,000 people.

On the other hand, last March 2,340 unaccompanied minors requested asylum for the first time in the EU, the majority coming from Syria (785) and Afghanistan (325).

The EU countries that received the highest number of asylum applications from unaccompanied minors were Germany (920) and the Netherlands (455).
