Milei will insist that the deputies approve the taxes that the senators rejected

The government of Javier Milei obtained the approval in the Senate of its star law and a fiscal pact, at the cost of giving in on privatizations of public companies and suffering a rejection in the tax increase, but the Executive will insist on these issues in the Chamber of Deputies when the project returns for its final sanction.

“We are going to insist,” the Chief of Staff, Guillermo Francos, said on Miter radio this Thursday, indicating that the Executive will present “concrete projects on privatization and concession proposals” of companies that were left out of approval in the Senate, such as Aerolíneas Argentinas, Correo Argentino and the public media that the Government removed from the debate to obtain approval of the law.

”We will try to recover in (the Chamber of) Deputies” the restitution of the income tax on salaries and the modification of the Personal Assets tax, Francos added, since the senators rejected both chapters when the vote took place. separately from the chapters of the law.

”In the Deputies, issues that have been modified in the Senate can be approved and others can be rejected,” explained Minister Francos, who has played a key role in the negotiations with senators and governors to get the law approved.

In a historic day, the Argentine Senate approved on Wednesday night the long-awaited law Bases and Starting Points for the Freedom of Argentines, also known as omnibus law or ‘Bases lawwith which the Milei government intends to establish the foundations for the profound transformation of Argentina’s economic and social model.

After eleven hours of uninterrupted debate and while thousands of protesters in the street spoke out against it, the ‘Bases law’ received 36 votes against and 37 in favor, including the ‘casting vote’ of the president of the Upper House and vice president. of the Republic, Victoria Villarruel, who broke the tie in a second vote.

But in the particular vote for each chapter, the senators rejected the Executive’s initiatives that increased tax revenues and made it easier to maintain the fiscal balance achieved in the first semester at the cost of a fierce adjustment.

The initiative that seeks to reduce the weight of the State in the economy and attract investments, will return to the Lower House for final approval. “It is a very important advance,” stressed Francos, who admitted that “this law does not solve all the problems.” But “it is a tool that will allow us to advance on many pending issues in Argentina,” he added.

After the approval of the law Bases and Starting Points for the Freedom of Argentines, Milei left early this Thursday for Italy to attend the G7 summit as a guest, the first leg of his European tour, which also includes the participation in the Global Summit for Peace in Ukraine, which will be held in Switzerland this weekend, and later travel again to Spain to receive an award from a liberal think tank.

”The world is watching this process of substantive transformation of Argentina, from this populism that has destroyed us to the management of freedom at all levels,” said Minister Francos.
