In the european elections in Greece things are going crosses. The electoral system there allows its citizens vote for up to four candidates, regardless of what party they are from. They do this through crosses, which they place in front of the candidates’ names before placing them in the ballot boxes. This way, they can mark as many names as they want, jumping from one list to another, but always a maximum of four.

These are rules that its citizens must know, since voting in Greece is an obligation for all those who are already of legal age. That is, for citizens who already have 17 years or older during the election year. That is, in these elections, those born before December 31, 2007. However, there are certain nuances in this obligation: some cases are exempt, such as, for example, those over 70 years of age.

Yes indeed, There is no fine contemplated for citizens who do not vote but rather the obligation is established with the objective of encouraging the population. But the figures confirm that it does not have much effect. In the last elections, those of 2019, the 50.66% of the population, nine points less than what they did in the general elections that year. This year it has fallen almost ten points, up to 41.39%. These have been the final results:

What results did Greece achieve in 2019?

In 2019, the most voted formation was then the conservative one New Democracy (ND), party of the Prime Minister of Greece, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, who won the legislative elections in May, being well ahead of the left-wing opposition Syrizaby Alexis Tsipras. This formation was ten points behind ND in the 2019 European Championships.

This left it with six MEPs, two less than Mitsotakis’ party. In the case of Greece, there is a threshold (3%) to overcome in order to enter the European Parliament. Thus, candidates who receive the The greatest number of crosses within a party are those chosen to occupy a seat in the chamber, as long as their parties get representation.
